WEST LOTHIAN DAY OUT!

What a cracking day if you did not mind the chicane of traffic cones on the m8 motorway or even the Sunday drivers out for a picnic. Why even the sheep on the hills outside Bathgate were all dressed in nice pink sheepskins just for our amusement. But when the destination was arrived at in the thriving metropolis of Airdrie yes that’s right the venue was the Airdrie Workings man Club a great venue for darts and you think you’re out for a good game of darts well blow me down with a feather through the doors were a squad of dart players who could have graced any television tournament. With professional and semi pro players in attendance along with current internationals from both sides of the border and I don’t mean Lanarkshire and West Lothian they were up from down south as well this was a classy field of players. In the draw were 143 players. West Lothian was well represented with Shug (Granddad )Rice/ Frank (The Boi )Quinn/Harry (Arry) Edwards/Gordon (The ) Bruce/Chris(I ate all the pies)Barnett/Also in attendance were The (Reverend) Jamie Bishop/Scott Begley Jnr/Colin (The Marshall)Robertson/Craig(C.A.P.A)Agnew and Old Man Mitchell who just tagged along as well.We even had our own medical staff who was there just to check the beer was safe to consume in Dr Kenny Surgenor he sais it was o.k. and we all believed him silly us!  Match of the day had to be Gordon Bruce who had a fantastic 3-2 win over one of the inform players in Scotland Craig Baxter this was a great match to watch and shows that after all these years Gordon still has what it takes to turn the big guns over.  Last man standing for West Lothian was the Old Man who went down in his board final to Scotland captain Mike Veitch who went 2-0 up then had pity and let the old fellow check 94 before putting him to bed with a cracking 13 dart leg final score 3-1. Making their board semi finals was The Reverend and I believe The Bruce was also in his board semi as well! Any way nice to see so many dart players in attendance a damn fine good day out so I am told my wife sent me to bed at 9 o’clock and has told me that I must not drink with The Marshall again as he and Big Geordie Dryburgh seem to have an adverse effect on my speech after a while!

COUNTY MATCH SATURDAY 15 th
Update to follow later in the week when i get the stats
But well done the mens B team a fine 4-2 win.

THE LAW!
Due to complexity's in the law about how old a player has to be to get into a pub to play darts. The East Calder Pigeon Club which hosts our dart league competitions has stated as long as the players are 16 and over and supervised they can play. As for the other public houses in the area it is up to the individual pub management to make the decision!
I know that when counties are played youth players are allowed to come and play in the Breich Club.
However it is is up to the management of the pubs to decide and not the dart league committee!
McMillans in Deans management will not let under 16's play so it may be in the interests of any team to make sure that their players can play if they are not over 18! Would make sense to check first would it not. This issue was raised last Monday at the Matchplay Doubles so hopefully the question has been answered?

GAME OF THE WEEK
This one belongs to Hugh Fallon playing for the Grange Bar in Fauldhouse with a superb 13 dart leg which included a nice maximum 180.

STIRRUP STANE PRESENTATION
To one and all a big thank you i have been involved with darts for a very long time some may say even to long!
But should i ever decide to give up the sport and should anyone ask me the question what was one of my best memories it will be with out a doubt in the top five will be the night i was asked to present the prizes for the Stirrup Stane darts team in Craigshill. A privilege to be there and to see so many new faces which goes to show that the sport of darts is alive and kicking in the Livingston area. The Stirrup Stane have twenty nine signed players if my memory serves and you can now understand why they have their own tournaments during the season. With some of the class players in their midst it would take some doing to win a title in this venue.
Below are a few of their champions.
Stirrup Stane singles Champion Fred Hamilton r/up Brian McIntyre.
A team singles champion Archie Wilson r/up Rab Main

MATCHPLAY PAIRS
Cracking tournament 52 pairs teams turned out for a great night of darts.
 Ton plus checks were (D Nisbet 121/G Bruce 117/G Dryburgh 116/J Mitchell100) Maximum hitters. (M Deegan/J Mitchell/J Kirk/G Finlayson/S Coulter/C Robertson)
When all said and done the last four standing were Stewart Russell+Alan Wilson up against Brian Mairs +Gary Finlayson all from the Firs Bar Mafiosa in Polbeth a cracking match but it was Gary and Brian who went to the final for the second time in three years. In the other semi/final it saw last years two finalists battled it out in an other superb game. Last years champions just did enough to stop John Hanlon and Gordon Bruce in a real high scoring match longest game being a 20 dart leg enough said i think!
So the final was set defending champions Big Geordie Dryburgh and Old Man Mitchell up against The Quiet Men the very dangerous Brian Mairs and Gary Finlayson.
First blood went to Mcmillans also second blood as well but it was far from over back came Gary to take the third leg and make the score 2-1 up next was Brian Mairs and Geordie Dryburgh and it was nip and tuck but then big Geordie found a cracking seam of form and a fabulous 116 finish saw the champions retain their title for another season anyway!
On the night their were some superb darts thrown Geordie and Jim hit no fewer than 12 sub 21 dart games.  Gordon Bruce and John Hanlon hit 9 sub 21 dart games. but with a doubt the top two games went to Davie Nisbet with a fabulous 12 darter and his partner in crime Colin Robertson with a 13 dart leg.

DARTS LEGEND
Nice to hear from one of West Lothians darts stars from the past. This man played at the highest level and was one of the finest dart players ever to grace the West Lothian county stage. Quite simply when a county draw was made no one in Scotland wanted this man up against them his name Mr Ian McGurk. I can claim to have had the pleasure of not just knowing him but was also lucky enough to play in the same Monday/Friday /Super league and Counties with him. What the county would give to have a man of his calibre back playing for us. I know it is almost 25 years since he graced the ockey but i can simply state a fact when dart players get together and talk about the GREATS Ian McGurks name is in with the very best of them.
(Ian McGurk/ Ian McGillvary/ David Nisbet/ Gordon Bruce/ Tam Hart/ Bunny Forrest/Jim McMillan /Malcolm Watson/ Bill Lessles/ Cliff Von Doring/ Martin Deegan/ John Drake/Harry Clelland ) and myself what a privelage to play along side these players we supported our selves through thick and thin not only on the Monday + Friday night leagues but in Super league and for West Lothian as well. I may have seen the best part of my dart career behind me but a few of these players are still performing to a fabulous level. But what great memories i think when you saw the commitment that the players mentioned above put into the teams that we played for was one of the reasons West Lothian had so much success back then.
Scottish Super League Champions. Scottish Guinness 7 Man Team Champions. Scottish C.I.U. Champions. Says it all i think!
